What Is A Clinical Psychologist?

In the UK, Clinical Psychologists are trained at a doctorate level. This is the highest level and standard of academic qualification and it typically takes at least 8 years of training and work experience before qualifying as a clinical psychologist. The title of ´Clinical Psychologist´ is a protected title and depends upon the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Therefore, one needs to be registered with the HCPC in order to practice as a Clinical Psychologist. The HCPC provide assurances of safe and high standards of clinical practice.

How Do I Choose A Therapist?

Generally, there are two main factors related to successful therapy according to research. The first is the quality of the relationship between the therapist and the person seeking assistance. Without a good therapeutic relationship, it is unlikely that therapeutic interventions will be effective. Therefore, it is important you choose somebody that you feel comfortable with, but someone who also pushes you to achieve your potential. To do this, you may decide to contact or see a number of therapists before committing to one. By meeting with us, you can get a sense of what we are like and whether you feel as if you can work with us.

The second factor relates to professional competence and the degree to which the therapist has invested the time and energy it requires to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to help those seeking therapy. To gauge this, it is advisable to read what they have to say, contact them with any questions you have, and ensure they are professionally registered.

What If I Have to Cancel My Psychotherapy Session?

If you cancel at less than 48 hours’ notice you will be liable for the full session fee as the time had been allocated to you. We will give you as much notice as possible if we need to cancel due to sickness or when we need to attend continued professional development training.

If you are travelling long distance, we also offer block therapy sessions of 3 hours.

Will Everything I Say In Therapy Be Confidential?

As registered healthcare professionals, we are bound by a strict code of confidentiality. However, in order to give you the best possible treatment, we discuss our clinical work regularly with a clinical supervisor, who is also a healthcare professional and bound by strict codes of confidentiality. Nevertheless, as stipulated in our standard therapy contract as well as our professional guidelines, we have a duty of care which means that we are obliged to contact relevant authorities if we were worried that you could harm yourself or others. In those circumstances and whenever possible, we would aim to discuss this with you first.
